IN BRIEF: The defending national champion Penn State Beaver Lions advanced to the semi-finals of the USCAA Women's Division II Tournament Thursday night with an 82-71 victory over Maine Augusta. The Lions had three in double digit scoring, led by a game-high 22 points by Khalia Adams.
ON THE COURT
- The game started in a back and forth fashion with neither team able to gain more than a two possession lead through the first quarter.
- In the opening stanza there were four ties and five lead changes, with the teams tied at 17 points apiece after ten minutes of action.
- Penn State Beaver established the first multiple possession lead when a jumper from Asia Borders put the Lions up 29-21.
- The Lions pushed their lead to as much as 12 late in the second quarter when a layup by Miranda Davis put PSU Beaver up 36-24.
- A jumper by Caitlin LaFountain and a three-pointer by Jamie Plummer allowed the Moose to cut their deficit to seven in the final moments of the second quarter, with Penn State Beaver leading 36-29 at the half.
- Penn State Beaver held Maine Augusta scoreless in the first two-and-a-half minutes of the third quarter while simultaneously pushing their lead to 16, capped by a three-pointer by Morgan Kurtz at 7:24 to make the score 45-29 Lions.
- Darby Toth was the first to put the Moose on the board in the third quarter with a layup at 7:14 to make it 45-31.
- The Lions upped their lead to 21 with 3:21 to go in the third quarter before Maine Augusta's Carmen Bragg hit a jumper and three pointer on consecutive possessions to make the score 56-40 with 1:32 to go in the quarter.
- The teams traded buckets over the final minute of the third quarter to make the score 58-45 Lions heading into the final stanza.
- The Lions pushed their lead to as much as 20 when a Brittany Jackson layup made it 67-47.
- The Moose were able to cut the deficit to 10 twice during the fourth quarter, but they were unable to get it into single digits.
- In the end, Penn State Beaver defeated Maine Augusta 82-71.
BEHIND THE BOXSCORE
- Penn State Beaver's First Team all-American Khalia Adams led all scorers with 22 points, while Brittany Jackson added 18 and fellow First-Teamer Morgan Kurtz had 15.
- Maine Augusta was led by Honorable Mention all-American Caitlin LaFountain who had 19 points and 12 rebounds, while First-Teamer Jamie Plummer had 19 points. Carmen Bragg and Darby Toth added 14 and 11 points, respectively.
- The Penn State Beaver bench outscored the Moose reserves 21-2 on the night.
